Our CAAS team provides a multi-disciplined approach to empower small and mid-sized businesses to make informed decisions through the application of advanced analytics, business intelligence and industry knowledge.

Job Summary

Stewart & Co. is seeking a full-time Fractional Controller to join our team. The ideal candidate will have 5 or more years of public accounting experience, CPA designation or equivalent, and knowledge of US GAAP, cash basis and accrual basis financial reporting.

This position is a perfect opportunity for someone with public accounting experience who desires more in-depth, client advisory relationships with entrepreneurs, while guiding them with the advice, data and support they need to profitably grow their businesses. In addition, those who are considering Controller or CFO roles with private industry businesses could also be a great fit.

The Fractional Controller will foster a team-based environment leveraging prior experiences while delivering exceptional leadership, client service and overall value to team members and clients. The key attributes that will make someone successful in this role include:

  • Ability to manage, coach, and motivate junior CAAS team members to grow
  • Assertive, collaborative, team player who inspires other team members to have desire to learn different clients and client industries
  • Mentors junior team members to develop a Controller skill set
  • Superior ability to guide team members to prioritize and focus in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment
  • Inspires the team to embrace emerging technology solutions such as OCR (Optical Character Recognition), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and robotic process automation / accounting "BOTS"
  • Professional presentation and great communication skills as contact with clients will be extensive
  • Cultivates team member interest in personal/professional development and advancement
  • Models a dedication to lifelong learning, including staying abreast of best practices in financial management
  • Ability to analyze and interpret - not just report - financial information to add value to client businesses as a trusted adviser
  • Superior Excel skills (create tables, use formulas, pivot tables)

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with our client’s owners/founders/leadership team members to gain an understanding of every aspect of the client’s company
  • This includes understanding their future vision for their companies to include helping them to benchmark their current state & develop strategic plans to achieve their desired future state
  • Seeks to understand all aspects of their business to build a solid foundation to providing holistic business solutions
  • Build and maintain consultative client relationships with cross-functional teams of the client's leadership group, based on an understanding of the clients’ business (i.e. has a desire to "walk in their shoes" and can understand their markets)
  • Develops the ability to communicate client specific or market specific data clearly and effectively to all levels of our client contacts including their CEOs, COOs, CFOs, etc., and other client contacts (including tax and other professional service partners)
  • Establishes internal controls, policies, and procedures relative to the client financial reporting process and risk environment
  • Meets with clients to review & discuss their month-end close, financial reporting packages and KPIs to include variation analyses while offering recommendations and/or helping identify the levers to improve growth, profitability and other objectives
  • Provide recommendations for best practices and streamlined accounting processes for financial reporting, compliance, and internal control adequacy and efficiencies
  • Prepare engagement proposals, drive accuracy, precision, and timeliness in all engagements

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA license or CMA certification
  • Minimum 5 years of public and industry experience
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Intellectual curiosity about changing dynamics on the public accounting profession
  • Proven record as a project manager and leader
  • Familiarity with the principles of corporate strategy and the ability to translate business ideas into forecasts and models
  • Demonstrated experience teaching team members how to manage and advise multiple clients
  • Practical knowledge of setting up accounting processes and policies within an organization and application of GAAP
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and deadline driven environment
  • Technology driven and astute; highly proficient in MS Office (PowerBI, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint & Excel, including Pivot & VLOOKUP), QuickBooks Desktop and Online, Xero and cloud technology tools, with demonstrated ability to embrace new systems, processes, technology, and ideas
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work and communicate effectively in a remote team/client organization using tools such as MS Teams and Zoom
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience translating financial concepts to individuals at all levels, including finance and non-finance individuals
  • Empathetic, with the ability to see the big picture, and understand how things relate and affect one another within the clients’ books and their business
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills; independent problem solver with good judgment and the ability to know when to escalate an issue to the partner on a client account
  • Must be an independent, resourceful self-starter, and desire to participate in a dynamic team environment with high ethical standards and Core Values that mirror those of our firm

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
